TE 804 Curriculum Development in Multicultural Education
- How We Plan to Raise a Multicultural Child Without Identity Problems

Multicultural Child Without Identity Problems

Reflective Statement:
This research paper was both interesting and personal in that it deals with multiculturalism in general and how my wife and I plan to raise our multicultural child. The class that this paper was part of, TE 804 Curriculum Development in Multicultural Education, was very thought provoking with regards to education and culture. It was very enlightening in understanding how, as instructors, we influence students so much even when we think we aren’t doing anything at all.

Process Statement:
A lot of research went into doing this paper as well as a lot of personal reflection. Coming from a home that was both German American and Ecuadorian American, my life had many different cultural influences. In a similar manner my daughter will have very mixed cultural influences in that my wife (her mother) is Armenian American. As the paper makes note, it is important to first understand one’s self before attempting to impart wisdom onto another. At some points it was difficult to put to words exactly how my wife and I plan to educate our child on not only the standard education criteria but on all the different aspects of life. This was a good project that really helped me see the importance of multiculturalism in education and in life in general.

Assessment Statement:
I believe this is a good research paper in attempting to describe a somewhat complex topic. I was able to apply a lot of what I learned from the reading of the two books used in the class, one dealing with multicultural education and one dealing with refugees living in the U.S. There are many aspects to multiculturalism that this class has shown me that I believe I addressed with this paper. The main skills attained and improved upon were: research skills, writing, organization, multicultural understanding, curricula modification so as to expand inclusion and understanding, multi-viewpoint topic presentation, an understanding of multiple theories dealing with culture and ideology.

I find your paper very touching and analytical. It's clear that you have rich traditions that affect your lives and choices today, and that seems to be important with the fast-changing world we live in. You cite plenty of interesting research theories in a practical way, which I found helpful.

Brent,

I enjoyed your multicultural education paper.

I think I can relate to it. Being an Indian, growing up in Africa most of my life, learning how to speak and write bengali(taught at home by parents in a time when Internet was not that prevalent)and speaking several different languages now. My husband and I speak different languages and come from differnt ethnic backgrounds. I strongly feel the important of exposing and teaching children to different multi cultural aspects, language, food, culture, equality, nature etc and you guys have such a rich environment to provide her.

Thank you very much for your comments. I think exposing children to many different cultures will also go a long way in preventing racial injustices.
